I hadn't known about Project 365 until a day or two before New Year's, but it immediately piqued my interest. The concept is simple: you take a photo a day, every day, for a whole year. Three hundred and sixty five photos, minimum. Sounds nice on paper--but in practice? Quite a commitment.
Although I was attracted to the idea, I also know how busy my schedule has become, and was reluctant to add another goal to my regular activities. I thought, "Maybe I'll just do three photos a week, 156 photos for the year." But, as the first week of 2011 has progressed, I've found myself pulled back to the camera each day. Now I have six days of photos...and it just seems a shame to break the pattern.
I'm sure once the Spring semester begins, there will be times when I may be tempted to quit or take breaks. Nonetheless, it'd be pretty cool if I could see this through. I missed having a decent backlog of photos to sort through at the end of 2010, and whether I like to admit it or not, I know photography will continue sliding on the backburner if I don't make an effort to prioritize it. So, to make it official: 2011, you are the year I plan to have a year-long visual record of. I'm not exactly sure where this journey will take me, but it's bound to be interesting.
To assist me in this quest I'll be making use of both my cameras (since the point-and-shoot is more compact and portable), which means the technical quality may vary at times. The actual photographs will likely vary from incredibly mundane to random to artistic to more interesting, and I'll probably use photography prompt sites like The Daily Shoot to guide me along the way. Ultimately, I don't want the project to become a burden, but I also don't want to fall into a routine of predictable photos. Additionally, I initially considered gathering weekly/monthly batches of photos, then editing and posting them in one fell swoop--but after doing that this week, I've realized that idea will be impractical during the semester. So after today's post, I'll try to post an actual "photo per day".
All that said, Project 365 starts now!
